PESHER AND THE NEW TESTAMENT The genre of Pesher was directly applied to the exegesis of many parts of the New Testament, especially those of Matthew and Paul. A prominent example is Krister Stendahl’s study (1954) of the so-called ‘formula quotations’ (an English synonym for the German Reflexionscitate), a group of some twenty quotations of the Old Testament text in the Gospel of Matthew, that are characterized by the introductory formula ‘in order that it may be fulfilled’.
